He sees the little girl deer fawn named Falene, who is fascinating, full of energy, and beautiful to behold. When Bambi begins to follow after Falene, becoming giddy with excitement and not quite sure of his footing, the wise old owl tells Bambi that he has become "twitterpated".

The internet and social media in all its forms is moving and morphing at warp speed. It is changing faster than a baby's diapers, and we are all jumping in as if our very lives depend on it. I'm wondering out loud, as it were, whether we as businessmen and women have become somewhat "Twitter-pated" ourselves.

Ask anyone who knows anything, and they will tell you straight up that if you aren't on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Friendfeed, etc. then you are missing the branding boat in a big way, and you may as well call in the dogs now, because your hunt is going to be over soon.

I have a LinkedIn account, a Biznik account, a Twitter account, and a Facebook account. Each has their own purpose for me. I feel like I am getting exposure, although the speed with which my learning curve, for all of the possible applications, needs to keep up has proven impossible for me. Still, I don't want to be one of the losers who is not up to snuff on it all. Really, who wants to be left standing at the starting gate when the rest of the runners have taken off?

So here's a question I'd like to pose to anyone who has (bless you) read this far: Can you undoubtedly say that your business has increased in revenue because of social media (first quarter this year over last year)? In other words, is social media a viable and, most importantly, quantifiable means of growing your business? I'd love to hear from anyone who would like to sound off on this. I for one think it would be a great study to see the percentages of those whose businesses took off or thrived because of social media, verses those that have seen little to no impact at all. Let's talk about it...

Lori A. As I read his article, I was nodding my head in agreement. Nodding in a way that was an "of course" agreement, an "isn't this the way most businesses have operated?" kind of agreement.

The astonishing thing to me was not so much the article, although very well written; it was the comments to the article. All of the comments were positive. Many of them were talking about Jack's ideas as the future of business. The future?, I asked myself. The future? Really? I had naively been under the impression that business had been done this way already (at least for the most part), because I had always espoused the same ideals Jack enumerated in his article.

Who knew? Guess not me. Hmm. Maybe that explains why I have felt like an odd-ball in the world of business over the years. Cudos to Jack for laying out the blueprint to the next generation of business owners. It can be a lot to take in and implement all at once, but take heart! This is where a coach can be a catalyst to help you plow through all of the should-dos and need-tos to move forward toward your vision of success. Here's Jacks recipe for business success:

1) Telling the truth with unconditional acceptance/love.

We have now reached a point in our evolution where there is a new standard of transparency. In almost all business practices, there is a new demand that duplicity be exposed. There also seems to be a critical mass emerging where we are aware that we are all connected. This makes unconditional acceptance (love) a new priority.

2) Where every business owner is a visionary and is responsible for carrying the flame of that vision.

Each and every business will have a purpose and a mission that holds the focus of each individual working in that business. The business owner's primary purpose will be to create a space where all are contributing to the energy of that vision, and where he/she is responsible for conveying the life of that vision to the team.

3) Creating alignment with the vision/mission of all participants in the organization.

Alignment is when the energy of each individual is moving in support of the agreed-upon vision. Without alignment with a core vision, it is impossible to keep pace with the increasing energy on the planet.

4) Creativity in Business

There will be an accelerated use of our right brains in experimenting with unlimited ideas for advancement in every field. There are never too many ideas. Scientists call their activities hypotheses, experiments, theories. They set up in their daily structure permission to fail repeatedly until in the end, they create the results approving/disproving their hypotheses. In the business realm, we will begin to do the same and allow the evolution of structures/systems more similar to the scientific realm, We will make it ok to experiment with our ideas while creating the business of the future.

5) Storytelling Required

For a business to grow and evolve into something greater, it is essential to know the 'stories' of the individuals who make up the organic resources of that business. This will require funding of retreats and seminars and other forms of networking to support this.

6) Systemic Thinking

This is the macro vision ~ seeing the whole picture and how your business affects other organizations, the evironment and all those with whom it interacts.

7) Bringing FUN into your Business

FUN at the work place will be the norm, and clocks, a thing of the past. Business owners will create through right-brain thinking games, structures, systems and methods all designed for workers to have 'fun' at their job. This will be an integral part of even the physical structure of the work place.

8) Spirituality in Business

Your purpose in life and core values, including those of the spirit, will be an integral part of the place where you work.

9) Acknowledgement

Acknowledgement of yourself and all other workers for their contribution to the mission. The number one thing people value most in life, and at work, is to be acknowledged, for their essence to be seen and heard.

10) Strengths

All business owners and workers will be using their strengths and talents to 100% capacity. Presently, it is more like 20%.

11) Leadership

We will continually be moving from 'boss' (this is the way it's always been done) to 'leaders' (I want your ideas on how we will innovate). Here are some specific characteristics defining the difference between a 'boss' and a 'leader'.

1. A Boss tells what needs to be done. A Leader asks what needs to be done.

2. A Boss always has the answer. A Leader wants to know what you think.

3. A Boss is impatient. A Leader is willing to wait.

4. A Boss makes decisions with no reasons given. A Leader gives reasons for any decision.

5. A Boss cares primarily about him/herself. A Leader cares primarily for the workers.

6. A Boss will not do menial work. A Leader is willing to do any job needed to support the workers.

12) A Superior Learning Organization

All company participants will be involved in their own personal growth ~ studying, going to classes and seminars. Having a coach, mentor or model to learn from and share in the process will be the norm.

Lori A. Social media is a viable and powerful tool in getting your message out to more people faster. If you're in business for yourself, I suggest you take advantage of one or more of the many social media sites out there, but be careful- it's not a toy! Take a look at this Social Media Primer:

The Goal of Social Media is to Increase Sales. Really?

Social media provides the tools that enable us to have online conversations. I know, the big advice out there today about social media is don’t try to sell anything to anyone. The idea of social media is to be part of the conversation to build relationships over time. Of course, our goal in business is to sell more stuff to more people. The new revolution in business is social media marketing. If done right, it can be your key to radically improving sales. The question is how do you increase sales by using social media? What should your strategy be? Sun Tzu in the Art of War explains that strategy is determined by the terrain. Here is an overview of the social media terrain. ...Read More

Lori A. It'll be an adventure! We'll rent a car, and then just take off. I don't know exactly how we'll get there, or why we should even go there in particular, but just think of it-the Grand Canyon! All we need are four wheels and the open road. Let's go!"

Taking a trip from New York to the Grand Canyon would not be for everyone. To many, it would just be a hair-brained idea. Irresponsible. Some are the adventurous sort, enjoying a risk or two, and would definitely think about it. Just a few would actually get in the car and start driving. Those few would be called entrepreneurs.

Obviously, in order to successfully leap full-on into this adventure, you have to have a map. No one would consider leaving the starting gate, or continuing along the way without one. Or would they?

Imagine for a moment, taking our 'little' trip without benefit of a roadmap. You get in the car, gas her up, and start driving; Grand Canyon or bust. You're trying to rely on the signs along the way. Sometimes you get off the beaten track and even enjoy yourself on some of the various rabbit trails you have gone down.

It's a long trip from NYC to the Grand Canyon. After several days of driving, and staying in road-side motels with questionable cleanliness, you begin to wonder why you have taken the trip in the first place. And where are you now? Are you even taking the most direct route? Two days ago, you came upon a rest stop to find that you had been heading to Wisconsin! You had to double back and get on track again.

You wonder, does anyone really care about the Grand Canyon? Maybe it isn't as great as you've heard, and you bet most people got there the fast way, by jet or something. It's easy for them to say how wonderful it is since they got there so much faster. They were lucky. Probably their father paid for the trip, too. You seriously consider stopping right where you are, because the bloody Grand Canyon has turned out to be more trouble than it is sure to be worth.

This is what takes place at various times in the life of many an entrepreneur. The vision of their adventure to the "Grand Canyon" springs them into action, and even carries them down the road a ways. But without the exercise of what I call Vision Mapping, one can and usually does lose sight of where they are going, and even why. Without benefit of a roadmap, people and businesses flounder. Organizations splinter, and success is simply a sandcastle without a foundation. A Coach can help you to discover and develop your Core (deeply held) Values and how to use them as your anchor in everything you do in order to reach your Vision while making a lasting impact on your world.

Lori A.
